TEST Garrett ATPro

We finally had a chance, courtesy of Geotek Center, to test the new home of ATPro Garrett.

The evidence taken on the official website of Garrett metal detector is described as an "ALL-TERRAIN metal detectors professional excellent performance in research of all types of metal, versatile and precise on all terrains. "

In fact, the first impression was very good, fits in 1 minute, the connectors (both of the plate cuff) are waterproof and then giving the user the possibility to fully immerse in water the metal to a depth of 3 meters (though this test, we could not do it for obvious reasons).

The control box is easy to understand and very compact, with all the functionality needed for research, thanks to the new Target ID and display the usual age-discrimination. The standard search
plate (DD Proformance), although a 8.5 x 11, appears to be well balanced and easy to handle in tight spaces and rather difficult.
say then that the first impression did not disappoint at all our expectations.

Now let's see the features of the machine taken from the manual:

- Operating frequency: 15 kHz
- Audio Mode: Standard and Professional
- Levels tone audio ID: 3
- Target ID cursor segments: 20 ( 12 per notch discrim.)
- Discrimination iron segments: 40 (0 to 39)
- Iron audioTM: identification of iron advanced
- Discrimination Notch accept / reject
- Search Mode: 6 (3 standard, 3 pro)
- Sensitivity - Depth adjustment: 8
- Pinpoint electronic
- Ground Balance
- Waterproof to 3 meters
- Headset Garrett provided (not underwater)
- standard plate: 8.5 "x 11" DD Proformance
- Rod length adjustable from 1.06 to 1.29 meters
- Total weight: 1.4 kg
- Power supply: 4 AA batteries

After reading the specifications in the manual (which is still in English but will be soon available also in Italian) we walked in the woods, ready to test its performance.

The research environment we have chosen for the test is a mountain with a beautiful land and red rock substrate mineralization medium, then say a ground rather difficult for each metal.

In the first instance we started with the standard features that are 3 and very easy to use. We also tested the notch, which in addition to the function Elim as previous models of Garrett, to select more accurately the range of unwanted signals.

The thing that struck us is the very ground of the manual white balance adjustment of the ground which provides a fully automatic, or always doing the classic pumps, but by simply holding down the appropriate button, without acting on any control, then the machine will automatically to balance giving an indication of the index of the mineralization of soil directly on the display.

At this point we decided to start with some brushed case, in the wood seems to be very stable and eliminate a large range of false signals caused by the impact on plants or rocks protruding.

Discrimination of iron segments (40 - and then from 0 to 39) also gives the possibility to perform a search type relic, and then to discriminate against only certain types of iron, in addition to the functionality of the user from Iron audioTM the ability to securely recognize all ferrous materials handling audio at will.
The Target ID is very precise and always the idea of what goes on digging, even logs on hunting was the argument giving more accurate values of scale, in fact, I dig the first cartridge case from the outset that we have discriminated ID value and many times that curiosity led us to dig up the signal, the car has always been right and we have always acknowledged shells cartridge.

After an hour of random search we decided to try the test, the first coin was made with a mixture of fine threaded vertically about 10 cm from the ground el'ATPro (always with the standard programs) had no problem to identify and hit the target.

The second test was done with the same coin in the mixture and an iron nail, using the standard program, all-metal and varying segments discrimination only on the iron, even in this case the metal was very precise as well as showing clearly hollow sound of the iron, even the usual bells, typical of Garrett, in a timely manner even at speeds of brushes, is that very very quickly slowly.

In addition we have also made a direct comparison with a Golden Mask 3 and the machines have proved to be equivalent with the difference that made us dig the Golden Mask blanks while the cartridge ATPro we could dig only target in addition to using good 'audio also the ID to identify in advance the type of goal.

We also use an iron ring and a first Silver later, coupled with a 10 cent coin, receiving both discrimination in all-metal good answers.

Another test was to put it next, to form a cross, different materials of different sizes in order to test the 3 tones, discrimination and notch programs that we custom set. Even in this case, the AT pro did not disappoint the expectations and has done very well, identifying precisely the type of target, engaging targets well and good that we do not discriminate on the basis of setting interest set.

The litmus test we did it by putting a coin under a layer of soil and, after having covered three boulders (as shown in the photo) ATPro both the Golden Mask have the exact same positive response, with the difference that in addition to playing "Good," both, Garrett identified correctly, with numeric ID, the goodness of the target.

For a summary go to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the machine:

Highs:

greatly reduced the negative effects of mineralized ground and the interference caused by an accidental collision with clods of earth and branches.
very versatile machine for all work situations (mountains, fields, beach, water ...) and valid in all environmental conditions (water, mud, dust ...)

Pinpointer very precise and depth in centimeters.

DD Although a standard plate, the machine is very light and well balanced allowing brushed smooth in every situation.

The sealed box is easy to understand and the controls are very intuitive, thus giving even the novice the opportunity to work immediately with a powerful machine, very simple.

The design is very attractive and well cared for in every detail.

Discrimination of iron segments and new functionality of Iron audioTM very helpful in having the user identification of iron advanced, and then while working at peak performance (all-metal mode), it is very easy to distinguish the iron and then decide whether to discriminate or dig.

Extreme accuracy in signal analysis and excellent recovery speed. He manages to clearly divide the signals from objects very close!
The signal is analyzed in its variation of intensity and it tells you whether it is a homogeneous object (coin) or heterogeneous structure (foils, caps, sheets crumpled).

Defects:

Tents much to belly flop on the ferrous target, thus giving a difficult identification of the precise point where the target is also to those who dig the iron materials.
If
beaten fairly violent (especially air) issue of false signals that could mislead the inexperienced searcher, however, even if false signals are hardly recognizable and mostly repetitive.
In addition, when these events occur, the Target ID and then oscillates with very large peaks, however, would not induce you to dig the target.

We hope to soon have the opportunity to try it in salt water and shoreline.
